Spring home project? Here are some things you need to know about utility location!
April 5, 2024Trenchless drilling: Why it’s being increasingly chosen
September 10, 2024Directional boring is a year-round activity, but – as with most things – it can vary season by season.
Directional boring, or DB. allows for work to be done to install utilities and cables without damaging the surface much but it can also present different challenges depending on the time of year the work is performed. So, what do you need to know about DB and the season? Read on:
Summer
Right now, summer has just begun, and this is the prime season for outdoor work. DB in the summer can be mostly smooth sailing, but extreme heat can pose challenges, when equipment overheats or your employees face fatigue or other heat-related ailments. These things can slow down your job, for sure!
Spring
In the spring, the temperatures aren’t as high, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges. Occasionally, the ground might have shifting conditions from things like freezing and thawing or heavy rains, meaning the drill path stability could be impacted. Your company will need to set standards to address these issues.
Winter
In the winter, one of the biggest – and most obvious – challenges is snow, ice and frozen ground. That doesn’t mean directional boring can’t happen – you can drill through frozen soil. But it requires more power and can cause your equipment to break down faster. It can also mean you need to work harder to keep your drill path. Snow, ice and other weather delays can also happen, and your equipment will take longer to warm up. You’ll also have to be cognizant of safety with your employees, as frostbite and hypothermia can occur.
Fall
The fall can be a great time to do outdoor projects that include directional boring, as the weather is mild and conditions are often ideal. However, there are some issues that can pop up. Leaves and lawn debris can get caught up in your machinery, which can cause delays and damage and the ground could be variable, condition-wise, depending on rainfall or cold. That just means your team has to adjust.
In a nutshell, directional boring is a great way to get your projects done, but it requires some adjustments and flexibility on your part! Each season has its unique benefits and challenges, for sure.
